Honda EV-Cub Marries Electric Bike With 2WD, Star Trek Communicator.

This here is what Honda hopes is the future of motorcycles. Small, electric and two-wheel drive, the EV-Cub could be ferrying riders around on its retro-styled frame as early as next year.
Like an all-wheel drive car, the 2WD motorcycle offers more stability and traction than its rear-wheel cousins, and may even be easier to learn for the beginner rider. Honda’s not alone in the 2WD space, nor is the space really that new—at least for concept vehicles. Big names like Yamaha have also been working on 2WD bikes for the better part of the last decade.

Bentley - Mulsanne

The Mulsanne is an all-new replacement of Bentley’s flagship model, the Arnage. Director of styling Dirk van Braeckel and his team worked closely with existing Arnage customers throughout the design process. As Van Braeckel explains, ‘they were very concerned about the car being recognisable as the new top model and not be mistaken for a [Bentley] Continental.

The first step was to come up with a different 'face'. Round headlamps have featured prominently in Bentley's history, but the design team updated the look with the addition of secondary lamps, creating a front end that is classically handsome but has a modern twist. The bespoke limousine follows the classic four-door saloon format, with a swooping rear end and strong muscular shoulders accentuated towards the back. Typical of a Bentley there is a short front overhang, large wheels and a generous distance between front axle and A-pillar.

Inside, craftsmanship is very much in evidence. It's also a place to retreat from the public eye. ‘When you step into the back of the car you sit behind the door opening line and behind the pillar edge so you have a lot of privacy,’ says van Braeckel. This helps the cabin seem compact from the exterior.

The car is largely hand built: it takes 420 hours to build one Mulsanne, 170 hours of which is spent on the interior alone. Laying out all the veneer for the wood trim takes two weeks. ‘Everything is hand made which opens up so many possibilities for design. On the body the only shut lines we have are on the bonnet. The doors and the boot everything else is integrated. It is like one big sculpture.’

The Mulsanne will be driven by an upgraded version of the Arnage's 6.75-litre V8 driving the rear wheels.

Audi e-tron

The e-tron study is a two-seater coupe made out of lightweight aluminium and carbonfibre, and powered by a lithium ion battery positioned at the front to achieve a 58% rear weight distribution with the four electric motors housed at the four corners of the car. The sports car promises sports car power – 313bhp and torque is 3319lb ft – reaching 62mph in just 4.8 seconds and able to speed up to 154mph.Working with the R8, the design team lead by Stefan Sielaff, set out to explore how to transform the sports car into an electric car. ‘You cannot just take a car like the R8 and simply replace the engine with an electric one,’ he says. ‘We started to test to see what could be the language, the formal repertoire, for our future electric car.’The e-tron maintains certain Audi generic codes, but adds to this an extra dose of form follows function. For instance Sielaff and his team created cooling systems, much like a household radiator, which when needed act like fans directing the extra heat created by the battery. Weight has been shed wherever possible. The thin seats are made of magnesium and the slim dashboard houses only the most essential information.

The company doesn’t believe you can design green cars from a rational point of view. ‘It has to be emotional,’ says Sielaff. He makes a comparison to food. ‘No one wanted to eat Soya products 10 or 20 years ago. But now healthy products on the whole have been made desirable. You need to make green cars delicious in the same way.'

latest computer developments 2009/2010

Nothing was in 2009 will soon pass and technological development are endless, you would have been aware of. Especially if you include the latest technology observers. And there are many who will be coming soon in the near future in the year 2010. Quite right, if you say we will welcome a new era forever berkomputer.Tidak Commencing the new technology following the calendar dates. Not knowing the time, it can only arise a new wave of technology development. Like this time, which began to be felt since the mid-year 2009.
What technological developments are keenly felt in the middle of this year? Opportunity this time, much to discuss on the development of hardware technology. Unlike previous years, this time to say almost felt more complete. Not only the development of purely processor, graphics controller will also experience a great revolution in the near future. Commence the use of Physics of the game developers, encourages the development of supporting hardware Physics.
Surely not just that. Indirectly of course hardware development will also trigger the development of applications and even operating system. Although both can be said interconnected. Be a little difficult to determine where the trigger. Like determining who is the first, the chicken or the egg? Here, we will present some of the emerging technological revolution in the mid-year 2009. There's a good idea to follow this info. At least be able to anticipate the investment in hardware purchases in accordance with developments in the future. Or if you fans the latest technology, can be used as a guide to your next shopping list.
CPUMasih with the same limits, the processor that will be discussed here, more focus for x86 processors. Or in other words, the processor for desktop PCs or notebooks. In addition to course numbers are much larger, we think this is more interesting to discuss for most readers.
Unlike the previous two giants fight initially only match the performance and clock. Then the trend continued with the process 64-bit computing. What is the trend of both the competition this time?
AMDSebetulnya is no longer a new technology. AMD with its new socket AM2 processors for desktop and a new socket AMD-socket options we already know a few months ago.
Some predict the presence of information-based AMD 65 nm production process, this CPU K8L will attend the next 2007 years. Additional integer and floating point, of course, will be available. Besides the possibility of inclusion of special instructions SSE4 which will be introduced first by Conroe.
Increased latency for DDR and DDR2 transition to the attention AMD. Equipped with Z-RAM technology, which will increase the cache hinggal five times, take advantage of the use of on-chip cache with a level higher densities.
Another speculation estimate AMD will make a breakthrough Anti-Hyper-Threading.
New technologies, Prior Year BaruSebuah course facilities opposite of Hyper-Threading. Instead of making one core into two virtual processors, AMD will try to combine a multi-core, and treated like a combination of a single core.
What's the purpose? It is expected that this step will further improve the process of computing the single-threaded application, which did not take advantage of multi-core processors.
Intel will IntelDari rang with the presence of Conroe. A core processor, the Intel development team developing a previously designed the Banias, a former mobile processor cores. With characteristic Banias who worked with the lack of heat is released and the needs of low-power ration made a promising start to Intel. Some motherboard chipsets, has expressed its support for this core. For actual performance, we wait for the launch scheduled for late July 2006.
Learning from previous experience, Intel also conducted a better change in the new processor generation. Left image and the performance increase is always accompanied by an increase in power consumption and heat released during operation. It is still very strong even felt the Pentium 4 processor. And the New Core microarchitecture, Intel will consider increasing the ratio between the increase in performance and power consumption.
Graphic ControllerBerbicara the GPU (Graphics Processor Unit) according to nVIDIA version, or the VPU (Visual Processing Unit) by ATI, it's two producers that rule. After they tried to offer load balancing solution with SLI (Scalable Link Interface) and CrossFire. NVIDIA before trying a new approach in the GeForce 7950 GX2 series. Dual processors on a video card. In addition to trying to produce a better performance as a single video card, these solutions will enable quad-GPU nVIDIA manifest in a PC system.
For the position now, GeForce 7950 GX2 has recognized advantages over the ATI Radeon X1900 XTX to business performance. Naturally, considering the GeForce 7950 GX2 dual GPU applied in a single video card.
Had both unique and chasing each other from time to time. Leadership did not always going to have nVIDIA. So too is ATI.
Began to circulate news to the presence of G80 GPU from nVIDIA that began in the early stages of development. Products that are scheduled to attend the last quarter of 2006, with the main advantages support the latest DirectX API (DirectX 10 next). For the specification is not yet confirmed. Your lover games, the latest video card, especially nVIDIA fanatic user must also be patient. Because the GPU is still under development at revision A0. Where are the new nVIDIA usually start marketing their products on the revision of the fastest-A2. And this will take up to 10 weeks or more.
The more the merging of PCs in various everyday environments, making it even more attention to additional functions. Convergence VGA with your home theater, making her give some additional functions. Availability of HDMI interface (High-Defi nition Multimedia Interface) is one of them. The need for HD (High-Definition) with resolutions up to 1920 specifications × 1080, progressive scan video interface to encourage the emergence of this minute.
In the near future, this interface will be like a compulsory requirement latest VGA. Something that can not be fulfilled previous video interfaces on the VGA. Like the S-video or component. Even the interface is also beginning to look at the motherboard with integrated graphics controller.
This PhysicsBelakangan must have heard the introduction of the PhysX whoop noise. One of the Ageia chip hardware that is devoted to computing Physics.
Produced as a form of card with PCI interface, the two producers of the ASUS and BFG. At first glance, this would be reminiscent of the use of graphic accelerator in the previous era. However, this is not entirely correct. If the former, the task is more on the graphics rendering accelerator, PhysX card to process more focused purely computational Physics. Like the movement of pieces of material, the wave motion of liquids (water, blood, and other liquids), the effect of gravity when an object moves, and so on.
CPU fixed AI computing the game. While the video card will focus on rendering, where in recent games, with a more realistic view is to work him hard enough.
The use of PhysX card was used by the engine Physix Ageia. While Physix Havox engine has a different approach. Configu ration for dual VGA, it will burden Havox second video card for Physics computing tasks. First adopted by the configu ration nVIDIA SLI. ATI had only recently agreed to also apply to dual VGA with CrossFire. Optical DriveSeperti had expected, "dispute" between the two formats Blu-ray and HD DVD will soon enter the consumer electronics area. More fierce battle will be felt the game console users.
PlayStation 3 to be representative of Blu-ray. Meanwhile, HD DVD by many observers predicted would become a mainstay of the Xbox 360. Very reasonable, considering Microsoft has also become one of the supporters of this format. Although not for the first version, probably next Xbox will adopt revisions of this format. Scenario provides an external HD DVD drive for the Xbox is also foreseen. With demikan, users are given the freedom to choose. Although a bit unusual for a game console, which provides an external drive accessories are optional.
On the downside, this is more solid at the same time ensuring each camp, the Blu-ray and HD DVD. In other words minimize the possibility of both of these formats will be found together with together, in a device. As happened (finally) on DVD + and -. For a while, you should forget about hoping to be available a device for the media combo Blu-ray and HD DVD.
Linux systems are MicrosoftOperating groundbreaking world. View beautiful Mac OS X is so tempting. However, it should be recognized, the use of Microsoft's operating system is still dominated for a while. The arrival of Windows Vista was widely anticipated. The use of Aero also be subject to the recipient's own GUI. And indirectly, it also triggers the development of PC technology on the device. Could well be one mediator in the dispute between the two camps.
As has been previously submitted, Physics is something new trends to ensure a more realistic view. Microsoft must also realize this. Development of application programming interfaces (APIs) recently estimated for Physics DirectPhysics name.
As the name implies, this course will become part of Microsoft's mainstay API library, which is DirectX. It is estimated that the upcoming DirectX 10 will begin to be enjoyed in the year 2007 that will come. While the availability DirectPhysics in it yet terkonfi rmasi. Since news of new development itself DirectPhysics broadcast earlier in June.
From the development of the DirectX API DirectPhysics plus, we can indirectly infer the direction of the development of physics. As we know, for a while physics for a while dominated by two camps. With special Ageia PhysX hardware. And the second camp is the Havok FX engine is doing computation processes on the graphic controller Physics. Or is the most ideal scenario, both agreed to merge an API is a combination of the two camps.
It was not all will be available on the market before the new year to be enjoyed by users. However, most of them can start available before the new year. And it promises a faster process, a more realistic view and beautiful. Prepare to live your pocket or savings, to be able to enjoy the technology, the time came.

Computer Recycling – Wall Clock Upcycled from Old Mac G3 Motherboard

Avant-garde wall decoration – beautiful wall clock created from a discarded Mac G3 computer motherboard by Kalovski Itim.

My good friend, the blogger Kalovski Itim, recently introduced an interesting computer recycling idea on Facebook – a beautiful, fully-functional wall clock recycled from a Mac G3 computer motherboard. If you’re a geek looking for a creative piece to decorate your wall or if you’re looking for something to give to a geek friend for a special occasion, this might just be your lucky day.
This isn’t exactly cradle to cradle recycling, but it’s a unique and creative computer recycling idea, nonetheless. Talk about creating something unique and useful from a piece of electronic junk, this recycled wall clock is an excellent wall decoration and if anything else, a great conversation starter.

Measuring 11.5″W by 17″H, the time piece comes with the original motherboard, complete with RAM and processor, for carriage, while a used Mac mouse functions as the pendulum bob. The clock itself, running on 2 AA batteries, is set on a discarded DVD with some keyboard keys glued on, to show the hours.

A second time piece, also from Kalovski, is a desk clock made from a used 3 1/2in computer hard drive. Measuring 4″w x 6″h and running on a single AA battery, this desk clock is actually my personal favorite.

Arguably, it looks like a close relative to Dr. Brown’s flux capacitor (for those of you old or geeky enough to know what I’m talking about) but I think it’s elegant without being loud, and would fit quite nicely even on a technophobe’s desk.

The Apple G3 recycled motherboard clock can be ordered from PixelThis on Etsy for $75. If you’re a friend of Kalovski on Facebook, I seem to recall him giving a good discount on this item for FB friends, so I would advice to order and message him directly from within the social network site. He’s also open to the idea of doing special orders or customized projects, if you send him your own piece of used or discarded computer hardware.

Largest Wind Farm In The World Opens In Texas

One of our more popular stories last week was about China taking the leadership on renewables development and overtaking the United States as the world’s largest clean energy market. We waited for an answer and it wasn’t long in coming. Who else would take the cudgels for the US but our own energy capital, the Lone Star state, Texas.

E.ON Climate and Renewables has recently announced the opening of its sprawling 781.5 megawatts wind farm in Roscoe, Texas. Billed to be the world’s largest wind farm to date, the project was completed at a cost of $1 billion and pushed through after lease negotiations with more than 300 property owners in the area. The facility sits in 100,000 acres of cotton farm land in four counties, about 220 miles west of Dallas. At peak capacity, the 627 wind turbines in the complex could generate electricity to power 230,000 homes.

How Does Wind Energy Work?

It’s not necessary to become a nerd to know how wind power works

Wind is a result from the uneven heating of the Earth by the sun and the fact that temperatures will always be attempting to reach an equilibrium (heat is definitely moving to a cooler area). With the rising price of energy and the destruction of the environment from standard fuels, it is increasingly equitable to harvest this renewable resource.

The benefits of wind energy are that it’s virtually free (once you buy the equipment) and there is no pollution. The disadvantages include the fact it isn’t a consistent source (the speed varies and many times it is insufficient to generate electricity) and it typically requires about one acre of land.

How Wind Energy Works?

The quantity of power that can be found varies by wind speed. The total amount available is known as it’s power density and it’s measured in watts per square meter. For this reason, the U.S. Doe has separated wind energy into classes from 1 to 7. The average wind speed for class 1 is 9.8 mph or less while the average for a class 7 is 21.1 or even more. For effective power production, class 2 winds (11.5 mph average speed) are usually required.

Usually, wind speeds increase as you get higher above the Earth. Due to this, the conventional windmill is installed on a tower no less than 30 feet above obstructions. There are two basic types of towers employed for residential wind power systems (free standing and guyed). Free standing towers are self supporting and are usually heavier which means they take special equipment (cranes) to erect them. Guyed towers are supported on a concrete base and anchored by wires for support. They typically are not as heavy and most manufacturer’s produce tilt down models which is often easily raised and lowered for maintenance.

The kinetic (moving energy) from the winds is harnessed by a device termed as turbine. This turbine includes airfoils (blades) that capture the power of the wind and use it to turn the shaft of an alternator (like you have on a car only bigger).

There are 2 basic kinds of blades (drag style and lifting style). We all have seen pictures of old fashioned windmills with the large flat blades which are an example of the drag style of airfoil. Lifting style blades are twisted rather than flat and resemble the propellor of a small airplane.

A turbine is classified as to whether it is made to be installed with the rotor in a horizontal or vertical position and whether the wind strikes the blades or the tower first. A vertical turbine typically requires less land for it’s installation and is an improved option for the more urban areas worldwide. An upwind turbine is designed for the wind to impact the airfoils before it does the tower.

These units normally have a tail on the turbine which is needed to keep the unit pointed into the wind. A downwind turbine does not require a tail as the wind acting on the blades tends to maintain it oriented properly.

These turbine systems would be damaged if they were to be permitted to turn at excessive speeds. Therefore, units will need to have automatic over-speed governing systems. Some systems use electrical braking systems while others use mechanical type brakes.

The output electricity from the alternator is sent to a controller which conditions it for use in the home. The use of residential wind power systems requires the home to either remain linked with the utility grid or store electricity in a battery for use when the wind will not blow sufficiently.

When the home is linked with the grid, the surplus electricity that is produced by the residential wind power system can be sold to the utility company in order to reduce or even eliminate your power company bill. During periods with not enough wind, the home is supplied power from the utility company.

The expense of Wind Energy

Small residential wind power turbines can be an attractive alternative, or addition, to those people needing more than 100-200 watts of power for their home, business, or remote facility. Unlike PV’s, which remain at basically a similar cost per watt independent of array size, wind generators get cheaper with increasing system size. At the 50 watt size level, for instance, a small residential power wind generator would cost about $8.00/watt compared to approximately $6.00/watt for a Photo voltaic module.

For this reason, all things being equal, Photovoltaic is cheaper for very small loads. As the system size gets larger, however, this “rule-of-thumb” reverses itself.

At 300 watts the wind mill costs are down to $2.50/watt, while the PV costs are still at $6.00/watt. For a 1,500 watt wind system the cost is down to $2.00/watt and at 10,000 watts the price of a wind generator (excluding electronics) is down to $1.50/watt.

Recycling phones is the smart choice

Recycling phones has become fashionable in recent years but, going by the current numbers, we still have a long way to go. This week is the National Cell Phone Recycling Week in the United States, an event spearheaded by the US Environmental Protection Agency, to encourage more Americans to recycle their used mobile phones.

Why recycle phones? Why not just trash these old, clunky, and obsolete units, have these hauled to the landfills, and be done with it?

Let’s review the reasons why recycling phones is the smart choice:

Recycling phones for cash

Those old cell phones that you’ve kept hidden in sock drawers, cupboards, or closets in your house are worth a good amount of money. Cell phone traders and recyclers, like Pacebutler Corporation will pay as much as $100 for each of those mobile phones (depending, of course, on the model, the brand, and the quality of the unit). The older the phones get, the less valuable they become. To get the best value, therefore, for your discarded cell phones, you need to sell these to a recycler, as soon as you upgrade to a newer model. Of course, if you’re thinking of keeping a reserve unit if something happens to your new one, by all means, keep one or two, but turn the rest in for cash.

Now, if for some reason, you don’t need the cash, you can still sell these old units and have the proceeds sent to a charity or non-profit of your choice. When you donate cell phones this way, you’re basically contributing much-needed funds to your preferred charity, from out of something that, in all likelihood, no longer has any value to you.

Recycling phones to clear up clutter

In our consumerist society, many of us are constantly drawn to the promise of newer, more advanced techno toys – dataphones, laptops, PDAs, or computers – being churned out by manufacturers like Apple, Samsung, or Motorola. The latest may not always be the best, as we all know, but that’s beside the point. People always go for shiny, new things all the time. Case in point: Apple sold 300,000 units of the iPad on the very first day of that product’s recent launch!

If you’re like many of us who are forever captivated by new technology, chances are, there’s a sizable collection of old, discarded cell phones and other electronic clutter stored in some forgotten box somewhere in your house or apartment. Recycling phones is an easy and convenient way to clear up a bit of the clutter. The transactions are conveniently done online, and in just a few minutes, you’ll have those old cell phones out of your house, for good. An added bonus to having a cleaner pad, would be the check from the used cell phone trader that should be in your mail, within a few days after you’ve sent the old units to them.

Used mobile phones in a recycling facility

Recycling Phones to help protect the environment

Chemicals from used cell phones being discarded in landfills do contaminate the surrounding soil and water systems. However, the biggest impact, in my opinion, recycling phones has on the environment, is in resources conservation. You see, in order to manufacture cell phones, you have to extract minerals and manufacture materials – like gold, silver, coltan, copper, plastic, and glass – that will become the components of these mobile devices.

By recycling phones, old materials are, in effect, returned to and reused in the manufacturing process. In most cases, the recovery is 100 percent. What this means is that an old cell phone can be broken down into its basic components, during the recycling process, and used to produce a brand new unit – without requiring the input of new materials! Cell phone recycling , as result, directly and significantly prevents damage to the environment, which inevitably occurs whenever new materials are mined or manufactured.

Recycling phones to help protect our health

As mentioned above, old cellular phones discarded in a landfill can potentially leach dangerous chemicals and metals to the soil or waterways around that particular landfill. We’re talking about lead, cadmium, arsenic, brominated flame retardants, and mercury – some of the most poisonous and dangerous metals known to man – making their way into our water reservoirs and agricultural lands.

Exposure to these elements have been known to cause brain, urinary, and nervous system disorders, as well as documented cases of cancer and other illnesses. Obviously, the metals found in each mobile phone unit are just minute or trace amounts, but think about the impact of thousands upon thousands of cellular phones being dumped in our city and county landfills. Recycling phones is the best way to have these devices safely disposed and to keep these hazards away from our landfills.

Recycling phones is gaining traction in the US, thanks to the relentless campaigns of agencies like EPA, but there’s still so much room for growth. At the moment, we are recycling less than 10 percent of the 130 million or so cell phones that we discard every year. Whether you just want to earn some extra cash, remove clutter, defend the environment, or help protect our health, recycling phones is the way to go. As the EPA refrain goes, “it’s an easy call to make.”

Consumer Electronics Show 2010 opens this week in Las Vegas

The International Consumer Electronics Show 2010 or CES 2010, the world’s largest consumer technology trade exhibition, will open this week in Las Vegas. The show, which will run from January 7-10, 2010, will feature a record 2830 exhibitors displaying 20,000 new products and the latest technology innovations.

“With a record number of new exhibitors, scores of new product introductions, several new Spotlights on the show floor and a dynamic lineup of keynotes sessions, the 2010 International CES will be our best show yet,” said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the Consumer Electronic Association (CEA).
CES 2010 also promises to be the “world’s largest environmentally friendly tradeshow.” From recycling all exhibit materials at the Las Vegas Convention Center, housing exhibits at the LEED-certified The Venetian hotel, use of biodegradable napkins and utensils, and use of recycled carpets, CES leads in adopting environmentally sustainable practices.

CEA has also partnered with EarthEra, which will issue renewable energy certificates from their wind energy sources – to offset electricity and carbon emissions during the event. In a move that addressed both security and environmental concerns, CES has donated $50,000 to the to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department to purchase T-3 Motion electric vehicles and accessories.

With such laudable effort on the part of the organizers of CES 2010, I fully expect to be dazzled by the cutting edge clean technology innovations on exhibit this year. Last year, we were quite impressed by such green gadgets as the flexible OLED (organic light-emitting diodes) wrist display developed by Universal Display Corporation, Motorola’s Renew W233 (the world’s first certified Carbonfree cell phone), and the ultra-efficient Solarbulb designed by miniWIZ. With so many green tech advances announced in 2009, I’m eagerly looking forward to the new innovations that will be unveiled this week.

“Follow Me” at CES 2010

To help participants navigate through the labyrinthine exhibit area and enhance their CES 2010 experience, a new mobile phone application for your smartphone called “Follow Me” has been introduced recently by Core-Apps LLC. “Follow Me” can help organize and schedule trade show information, store exhibitor information, navigate the exhibit area using interactive floor maps, and store complimentary coupons from local merchants. Available for $1.99 at iTunes for direct download, “Follow Me” is compatible with iPhone and iPod Touch and requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later.

Digg investigates claims of conservative 'censorship'

The popular link-sharing website Digg is investigating claims that a group of the site's "influential conservative" members are systematically downgrading thousands of stories deemed to be "liberal".

Online magazine AlterNet claimed to have uncovered a group of Digg members – dubbed "Digg Patriots" – who have "censored hundreds of users, dozens of websites, and thousands of stories" from the site. Alternet alleged that the Digg Patriots, thought to number nearly 100 members, are "able to bury over 90% of articles by certain users and websites submitted within 1-3 hours".

Rose, founder of Digg, said via Twitter: "We're looking into this."

The six-year-old social bookmarking website ranks submitted web content by the number of times they are ranked up or down. Popular items, those receiving the most "Diggs" and least attempts to "Bury", are voted onto the Digg homepage, and can generate significant amounts of traffic for external websites. Digg had 7.6 million unique visitors in June this year, according to figures from analytics firm Compete.

AlterNet claimed the group of Digg Patriots, whose political affiliations are described as "conservative", work to "censor" the prominence of articles "even slightly critical of the GOP/Tea Party/FoxNews/corporations".

A posting said by AlterNet to be by the alleged founder of the Digg Patriots, "phoenixtx", reads:

"The more liberal stories that were buried the better chance conservative stories have to get to the front page. I'll continue to bury their submissions until they change their ways and become conservatives."

An AlterNet investigation alleged that the Digg Patriots discussed censorship strategies at a Yahoo group which has since been removed. A posting said to be by one of the group's senior strategists, said:

"To all of our new group members: We are really happy you have joined us at DiggPatriots! Please remember this is a group that we are trying to keep below the radar. Please do not disclose this group's existence to anyone outside the group on Digg or elsewhere. The longer we can keep this group on the down low, the better. I know you probably already knew that, but I wanted to make sure we are all on the same page as far as the keeping this group from being exposed to the public."

AlterNet also claimed "dozens of duplicate or previously banned" Digg users have set up alternate accounts.

Digg, currently undergoing a transition to a new website, may be free from the coercion of groups of users when it launches its next version, a preliminary analysis by AlterNet is said to have shown.

Apple's self-inflicted bruises take the shine off its untouchable brand

The iPhone 4 has proved a hit with consumers but there is growing resentment about the 'Mac monopoly' by which Apple controls access to music and apps. Photograph: Toru Yamanaka/AFP/Getty Images

Despite the opening of their flagship store in London's Covent Garden yesterday, Apple has been having a tricky time. The company is celebrated for its sleek design and hassle-free software, but there is growing resistance to the "closed shop" nature of its products, the "Mac monopoly" that means users must buy their music through iTunes and that all "apps" must come pre-approved from the Apple store. Such tight – and profitable – security is grudgingly accepted by Mac, iPhone and iPad users because the machines themselves are so good.

Now, however, Apple's untouchable brand has been tarnished. First came the grumbles from technophiles, underwhelmed by the iPad, although this didn't stop the gadget selling at record levels. Then came the iPhone 4's handling issue. The "loses signal if you hold it" hiccup compromised what is, ultimately, a mobile phone.

Apple then managed to compound the fault: first offering little more than a bandage for the affected area and then revealing another mistake entirely. The admission that its method for measuring what phone signal was available had been wrong all along. In all its phones.

And to cap it all, this week the German government pointed out a security failure that renders some iPhones, iPads and iPods vulnerable to hackers, a threat considered so dangerous that the German Federal Office for Information Security officially warned citizens of "two critical weak points for which no patch exists". A statement that leaves Apple's all-important reputation for perfection looking bruised.

Apple customers stew as glitches hit launch of updated iPhone

Over recent years, it has become a staple image of the technology industry: hundreds of gadget fans queueing all night to get their hands on the latest trendy gizmo from Apple. But eager devotees across Britain were left angry and frustrated yesterday after a series of problems hit the launch of the Californian company's latest product, the iPhone 3G.

The latest version of Apple's mobile phone - a faster model than the original iPhone released last November - was unveiled at shops around the world with much fanfare yesterday morning.

Instead of getting their new toy, however, thousands of British customers were delayed as a glitch hit the computerised credit checking system belonging to the mobile network operator O2.

"We can confirm that Apple stores are having technical issues connecting to the O2 systems," a spokesman said at the height of the problems. "We are working to get the systems back up to full speed as quickly as possible." Hundreds of customers arrived early at shops around the country for the launch at 8.02am - even the time itself chosen to squeeze out a little extra publicity for the launch. Minutes later, however, queues began to back up and new purchases failed to register.

"I was in the queue from 7am and didn't get served until 11.30am as their systems went down," said one disgruntled customer on the Guardian website. "It took around 40 minutes for each customer's credit decision to be made and at the end of all that they only had four 16 gigabyte models in stock - and this was the flagship Manchester store." Some dedicated customers took several hours to get their hands on an iPhone, while others simply gave up. "It's not ideal, but that's life," said 26-year-old Chris Moorby, who had queued outside the flagship Apple shop in Regent Street, London. "I'm leaving now because I've got to go to work."

Last night the problems were being blamed on the sudden influx of customers, which crashed the system and forced staff to run manual checks on all new accounts. However, it remains unclear why O2 did not anticipate the surge in demand. Carphone Warehouse, another chain selling the handset, had already announced that interest in the iPhone 3G was up to 10 times greater than its predecessor, and last week O2's website collapsed under the weight of traffic when it opened for orders.

But it was not only O2 which was struggling. A customer from Stafford, who had ordered his iPhone 3G online through Carphone Warehouse, said he had received a guarantee on Thursday evening that it would be delivered the next day. "I stayed at home for the delivery, but it never arrived," he said. "I finally got through to them on the phone and they said nobody would be receiving their orders until after the weekend. I've now cancelled my order."

Observers largely blamed the crash on onerous new sign-up procedures to try to reduce so-called "unlockers". These customers - who fail to sign up to a contract and use their iPhones on a different mobile network - are now forced to sign on the spot, and must provide photographic ID and detailed personal information.

Apple is desperate to make an impact on the enormous mobile phone market. The iPhone 3G boasts faster internet connection, satellite navigation and access to an online shop full of downloadable programs.

O2 has an exclusive contract to provide service to iPhones in Britain, and could come under pressure from the US technology giant if such problems continue.

Ian Fogg, a mobile industry analyst with Jupiter Research, said that all would be forgotten if O2 managed to get its systems working smoothly - but customers could still find it hard to get hold of an iPhone 3G if the gadget proved as popular as it appears. "Really these day one teething problems are just that," he said. "One of the big challenges for hit products is making sure that you've got enough to meet demand."
