Technological development in latest years has made it realistic to have faith in TV in 3D for everyone. The renaissance for 3D movies in the cinemas has created a new hope, that consumers will embrace the new televisions with 3D technology, so that TV shows, movies and computer games can be enjoyed from the couch with an extra dimension.
The big challenge now is that the producers of movies, games and tv sets will have to agree on a standard among the 3D technologies. A standard that will save us from having multiple 3D-glasses, multiple players for movies and games etc. Just like the match between blu-ray and HD-DVD, we may risk that several operators on the market will fight for their own 3D format.
An international movie organisation, is precisely working for a common standard for 3D content in the consumer homes no matter the player or medium. They are cooperating with a number of producers and suppliers of 3D content and 3D equipment, including Philips, to find the optimal solution to the problem of reaching a common standard. A 3D standard that will make us able to sit down in our living rooms in the future without thinking about standards and formats.
