Honda EV-Cub Marries Electric Bike With 2WD, Star Trek Communicator.

This here is what Honda hopes is the future of motorcycles. Small, electric and two-wheel drive, the EV-Cub could be ferrying riders around on its retro-styled frame as early as next year.
Like an all-wheel drive car, the 2WD motorcycle offers more stability and traction than its rear-wheel cousins, and may even be easier to learn for the beginner rider. Honda’s not alone in the 2WD space, nor is the space really that new—at least for concept vehicles. Big names like Yamaha have also been working on 2WD bikes for the better part of the last decade.

Computer Recycling – Wall Clock Upcycled from Old Mac G3 Motherboard

Avant-garde wall decoration – beautiful wall clock created from a discarded Mac G3 computer motherboard by Kalovski Itim.

My good friend, the blogger Kalovski Itim, recently introduced an interesting computer recycling idea on Facebook – a beautiful, fully-functional wall clock recycled from a Mac G3 computer motherboard. If you’re a geek looking for a creative piece to decorate your wall or if you’re looking for something to give to a geek friend for a special occasion, this might just be your lucky day.
This isn’t exactly cradle to cradle recycling, but it’s a unique and creative computer recycling idea, nonetheless. Talk about creating something unique and useful from a piece of electronic junk, this recycled wall clock is an excellent wall decoration and if anything else, a great conversation starter.

Measuring 11.5″W by 17″H, the time piece comes with the original motherboard, complete with RAM and processor, for carriage, while a used Mac mouse functions as the pendulum bob. The clock itself, running on 2 AA batteries, is set on a discarded DVD with some keyboard keys glued on, to show the hours.

A second time piece, also from Kalovski, is a desk clock made from a used 3 1/2in computer hard drive. Measuring 4″w x 6″h and running on a single AA battery, this desk clock is actually my personal favorite.

Arguably, it looks like a close relative to Dr. Brown’s flux capacitor (for those of you old or geeky enough to know what I’m talking about) but I think it’s elegant without being loud, and would fit quite nicely even on a technophobe’s desk.

The Apple G3 recycled motherboard clock can be ordered from PixelThis on Etsy for $75. If you’re a friend of Kalovski on Facebook, I seem to recall him giving a good discount on this item for FB friends, so I would advice to order and message him directly from within the social network site. He’s also open to the idea of doing special orders or customized projects, if you send him your own piece of used or discarded computer hardware.

How Does Wind Energy Work?

It’s not necessary to become a nerd to know how wind power works

Wind is a result from the uneven heating of the Earth by the sun and the fact that temperatures will always be attempting to reach an equilibrium (heat is definitely moving to a cooler area). With the rising price of energy and the destruction of the environment from standard fuels, it is increasingly equitable to harvest this renewable resource.

The benefits of wind energy are that it’s virtually free (once you buy the equipment) and there is no pollution. The disadvantages include the fact it isn’t a consistent source (the speed varies and many times it is insufficient to generate electricity) and it typically requires about one acre of land.

How Wind Energy Works?

The quantity of power that can be found varies by wind speed. The total amount available is known as it’s power density and it’s measured in watts per square meter. For this reason, the U.S. Doe has separated wind energy into classes from 1 to 7. The average wind speed for class 1 is 9.8 mph or less while the average for a class 7 is 21.1 or even more. For effective power production, class 2 winds (11.5 mph average speed) are usually required.

Usually, wind speeds increase as you get higher above the Earth. Due to this, the conventional windmill is installed on a tower no less than 30 feet above obstructions. There are two basic types of towers employed for residential wind power systems (free standing and guyed). Free standing towers are self supporting and are usually heavier which means they take special equipment (cranes) to erect them. Guyed towers are supported on a concrete base and anchored by wires for support. They typically are not as heavy and most manufacturer’s produce tilt down models which is often easily raised and lowered for maintenance.

The kinetic (moving energy) from the winds is harnessed by a device termed as turbine. This turbine includes airfoils (blades) that capture the power of the wind and use it to turn the shaft of an alternator (like you have on a car only bigger).

There are 2 basic kinds of blades (drag style and lifting style). We all have seen pictures of old fashioned windmills with the large flat blades which are an example of the drag style of airfoil. Lifting style blades are twisted rather than flat and resemble the propellor of a small airplane.

A turbine is classified as to whether it is made to be installed with the rotor in a horizontal or vertical position and whether the wind strikes the blades or the tower first. A vertical turbine typically requires less land for it’s installation and is an improved option for the more urban areas worldwide. An upwind turbine is designed for the wind to impact the airfoils before it does the tower.

These units normally have a tail on the turbine which is needed to keep the unit pointed into the wind. A downwind turbine does not require a tail as the wind acting on the blades tends to maintain it oriented properly.

These turbine systems would be damaged if they were to be permitted to turn at excessive speeds. Therefore, units will need to have automatic over-speed governing systems. Some systems use electrical braking systems while others use mechanical type brakes.

The output electricity from the alternator is sent to a controller which conditions it for use in the home. The use of residential wind power systems requires the home to either remain linked with the utility grid or store electricity in a battery for use when the wind will not blow sufficiently.

When the home is linked with the grid, the surplus electricity that is produced by the residential wind power system can be sold to the utility company in order to reduce or even eliminate your power company bill. During periods with not enough wind, the home is supplied power from the utility company.

The expense of Wind Energy

Small residential wind power turbines can be an attractive alternative, or addition, to those people needing more than 100-200 watts of power for their home, business, or remote facility. Unlike PV’s, which remain at basically a similar cost per watt independent of array size, wind generators get cheaper with increasing system size. At the 50 watt size level, for instance, a small residential power wind generator would cost about $8.00/watt compared to approximately $6.00/watt for a Photo voltaic module.

For this reason, all things being equal, Photovoltaic is cheaper for very small loads. As the system size gets larger, however, this “rule-of-thumb” reverses itself.

At 300 watts the wind mill costs are down to $2.50/watt, while the PV costs are still at $6.00/watt. For a 1,500 watt wind system the cost is down to $2.00/watt and at 10,000 watts the price of a wind generator (excluding electronics) is down to $1.50/watt.

Digg investigates claims of conservative 'censorship'

The popular link-sharing website Digg is investigating claims that a group of the site's "influential conservative" members are systematically downgrading thousands of stories deemed to be "liberal".

Online magazine AlterNet claimed to have uncovered a group of Digg members – dubbed "Digg Patriots" – who have "censored hundreds of users, dozens of websites, and thousands of stories" from the site. Alternet alleged that the Digg Patriots, thought to number nearly 100 members, are "able to bury over 90% of articles by certain users and websites submitted within 1-3 hours".

Rose, founder of Digg, said via Twitter: "We're looking into this."

The six-year-old social bookmarking website ranks submitted web content by the number of times they are ranked up or down. Popular items, those receiving the most "Diggs" and least attempts to "Bury", are voted onto the Digg homepage, and can generate significant amounts of traffic for external websites. Digg had 7.6 million unique visitors in June this year, according to figures from analytics firm Compete.

AlterNet claimed the group of Digg Patriots, whose political affiliations are described as "conservative", work to "censor" the prominence of articles "even slightly critical of the GOP/Tea Party/FoxNews/corporations".

A posting said by AlterNet to be by the alleged founder of the Digg Patriots, "phoenixtx", reads:

"The more liberal stories that were buried the better chance conservative stories have to get to the front page. I'll continue to bury their submissions until they change their ways and become conservatives."

An AlterNet investigation alleged that the Digg Patriots discussed censorship strategies at a Yahoo group which has since been removed. A posting said to be by one of the group's senior strategists, said:

"To all of our new group members: We are really happy you have joined us at DiggPatriots! Please remember this is a group that we are trying to keep below the radar. Please do not disclose this group's existence to anyone outside the group on Digg or elsewhere. The longer we can keep this group on the down low, the better. I know you probably already knew that, but I wanted to make sure we are all on the same page as far as the keeping this group from being exposed to the public."

AlterNet also claimed "dozens of duplicate or previously banned" Digg users have set up alternate accounts.

Digg, currently undergoing a transition to a new website, may be free from the coercion of groups of users when it launches its next version, a preliminary analysis by AlterNet is said to have shown.

Car Accidents Linked To New Dashboard Internet

Despite the fact that studies have proven texting while driving is 4 times as likely to cause an auto accident then driving under the influence of alcohol, automakers and high-tech industries have come together once again to provide the latest technology to distract drivers from…you got it, driving!
High tech industries such as Google see great profit in linking up with automakers to provide the latest and greatest technology. At this years Consumer Electronic Show, the new “infotainment systems” were revealed. These systems comprise of various electronic devices that are set within an automobile’s dashboard. They display information such as 3-D maps/driving directions, high definition video, and web pages. The items will hit the market this year and will soon become standard equipment offered in new vehicles.
Safety advocates believe this could prove to be very dangerous. Research has proven that mobile device usage while driving is an increasing cause of accidents and injuries for both drivers and pedestrians. Unlike Ford’s new system which only will work when the car is in park, Audi’s new system lets drivers pull up websites as they are in motion.
Automakers claim safety is their top priority, however, most of the new infotainment systems leave the driver as the responsible party for limiting their own use.
The industry giants state they are just giving consumers what they want and the things that I-Phones and the Internet have trained them to expect. Safety advocates believe these new options will increase the already alarming statistics of accidents and injuries on the road.

Dolby Labs Interviewed Regarding PC Audio

TweakTown: Hello and welcome to TweakTown. Thank you for the opportunity to conduct this interview today about Dolby's involvement in the PC world.

Dolby has been well respected in the professional world of audio for some time now. When did the company first get involved in the world of personal computing?

Dolby: Dolby is the global leader in entertainment technologies for the movies, at home, or on the go. Therefore, it made complete sense that the surround sound specialists who bought cinematic surround sound from the movie theater to the home, should target PCs.

Our initial focus was DVD playback software and for many years there have been a huge variety of DVD playback applications available that not only play a DVD, but give PC users the opportunity to enjoy their movie or music video in virtual surround sound, either over any standard headphones or 2.1 speakers.
Then, in 2005, as the PC became increasingly used by all types of consumers for entertainment, Dolby launched the “PC Entertainment Experience”. This enabled PC manufacturers to integrate a suite of Dolby technologies directly onto the PC motherboard, meaning that whatever you did on your PC and whatever application you used, you could enjoy all of your movies, music and games in cinema-style, high-quality Dolby surround sound.

TT: Was there a key motivating factor behind the move into personal computing for the company? Is it a case of moving with the times?
Dolby: In all the areas that we work – be it at the movies, TV, games, or mobile phones, Dolby’s over-riding goal is to improve the entertainment experience for consumers. In the last decade, we’ve seen dramatic changes in the way that consumers use their PCs. No longer just used for emailing, managing personal finances and online shopping, PCs were becoming increasingly used by consumers to store, manage and experience their entertainment.
Audio is of course an essential part of the entertainment experience, so for this reason it made sense for Dolby to integrate technologies into the PC that would enhance its audio performance.
TT: Regarding the 'Dolby PC Entertainment Experience' which is one of Dolby's most recent packages for sound restoration and maximization, who is the target audience for this product? - It sounds like something for movie buffs largely, but will the average user be able to get as much out of it?
Dolby Labs
 Interviewed Regarding PC Audio
Dolby: The Dolby PC Entertainment Experience was developed with all types of consumers in mind; movie buffs, music lovers and gamers – regardless of whether they are “hard core” users or use their PCs for entertainment just from time to time.
TT: Following on closely from the last question, will this software require any special knowledge of sound in general, or more specifically surround sound, to be used to its full potential?

Dolby: The audio settings for Dolby Home Theater and Dolby Advanced Audio are all preconfigured, so no specialist surround sound knowledge is required. We also designed the audio controls to be very easy to use, even for the most inexperienced of PC users.
TT: It sounds like a difficult task transforming the (literal) multi-media PC of today into an all encompassing audio powerhouse; especially when just using software. How did Dolby compensate for the seemingly endless amount of different speaker/sound card combinations out there at the moment when designing the Dolby Home Theater v3 and Dolby Advanced Audio packages?
Dolby: One of the great new features in Dolby Home Theater v3 and Dolby Advanced Audio is our “Audio Optimization” technology. This technology enhances the speaker performance of laptops and is individually configured according to the characteristics of a laptop’s speakers. This means that for each model of laptop, the manufacturer sends Dolby a sample and one of our expert audio engineers tune the technology in order to get the best possible audio performance and experience from that machine.
The results are really impressive! Today’s sleek and slim laptop designs mean that the space available for speakers is becoming smaller. Therefore “Audio Optimization” from Dolby is an essential technology, as it can dramatically boost the audio performance and quality of any laptop speaker – no matter how small.
TT: I'm interested in the natural bass element of the software, particularly in how the bass is shifted up one octave. Can you expand on this technology for our readers?
Dolby: Natural Bass extends bass response up to an octave by recognizing, measuring and working within the characteristics and limitations of the speakers to harness their best, most natural-sounding bass response.
Working from the assumption that the best bass sounds are the ones your ears actually hear, Natural Bass is designed to produce an optimal bass response from speakers of almost any size. The technology pushes speakers to produce as much bass performance as possible while guarding against sudden peaks that could potentially damage speaker elements. And it maintains clearly audible bass, even when the volume is set low.

PETMAN robot to closely simulate soldiers

A freely walking biped robot the size and shape of a human being is being developed to realistically simulate a soldier wearing protective clothing. The robot, PETMAN (from Protection Ensemble Test Mannequin), is being developed by Boston Dynamics for the US Army for testing chemical protection clothing. The anthropomorphic robot will be able to balance itself while walking, crawling, doing calisthenics, and generally moving freely like a human while being exposed to chemical warfare agents.

At its current stage the robot resembles a box on legs, but in its final form it will closely resemble a person, having “the shape and size of a standard human,” according to VP of Engineering at Boston Dynamics, Robert Playter. When completed, PETMAN will be the first anthropomorphic robot to move dynamically like a real person, Playter said. The army also wanted the robot to simulate physiological responses inside the suit, such as sweating, temperature and humidity control, and even breathing, to even more realistically simulate a soldier wearing a protective suit. The prototype robot walks heel-to-toe just like a human, and remains balanced even when pushed. In tests it has achieved a fast walking speed of 4.4 mph walking on a moving conveyor belt. PETMAN’s walking algorithm and the mechanical design are based on a previous Boston Dynamics robot known as Big Dog, which is designed for carrying supplies over almost any terrain.

Like its predecessor, the PETMAN robot has a hydraulic actuation system and articulated legs with shock-absorbing elements. The robot is under the control of an on-board computer and an array of sensors and internal monitoring systems.

The 13-month developmental period will be followed by 17 months of building, installation, and validation. Delivery of the completed and tested robot is expected some time in 2011. Boston Dynamics is a small company that spun off MIT in 1992. It specializes in robotics, with many of its projects being for military applications. Measurement Technology Northwest, Midwest Research Institute (MRI), Smith Carter CUH2A (SCC) and HHI Corporation are all partners in the PETMAN project.

Apple's iPad Wi-Fi with 3G: Is anytime access worth it?

In the five weeks I've spent with an iPad, little has made me back off my initial impressions: While not for everybody, Apple's freshly conceived tablet is indeed a stunning game-changer. But the Wi-Fi-only iPad model I've been using has at least one big drawback: Wi-Fi still isn't ubiquitous. Over the weekend, I've been trying out the model that aims to address this void, the iPad Wi-Fi "plus" 3G that went on sale Friday. Thanks to AT&T's wireless 3G cellular service, I browsed the Web and streamed video sans Wi-Fi in a suburban New Jersey park, sitting in the grandstand at Yankee Stadium and in my car.

The price for this extra wireless freedom is $629 for a 16-gigabyte model, $729 for 32GB and $829 for 64GB. That compares with $499, $599 and $699 for the Wi-Fi-only versions.

Meanwhile, AT&T charges $14.99 a month for 250 megabytes of wireless data and $29.99 for unlimited data. No contract is required, but you do have to tell AT&T if you don't want to continue. The prepay plans automatically renew. It's all easily managed on the iPad itself.

You have flexibility to switch plans on the go. I easily burned past 250MB. The San Francisco Chronicle estimates that 250MB will give you about 35 minutes of YouTube video, or a few thousand Web pages and typical e-mail use.

Is anytime Internet access worth the premium? It boils down to how often you'll be out and about without Wi-Fi access.

Proving as always that cellular service varies by location, I found browsing the Web poky in the upper deck of Yankee Stadium but reasonably fast in the suburban park and in my house.

I had no hiccups streaming the movie "Julie & Julia" through the free Netflix app. Video on Netflix displays in lower resolution when using 3G compared with Wi-Fi, but the difference wasn't stark.

I could not make the same statement concerning videos on YouTube. In 3G, the quality was dramatically inferior (read: lousy). Moreover, ABC's iPad app wouldn't play 3G videos at all. Instead, a warning appears: "Cellular networks are not supported at this time."

Apple says it made the decision to downgrade resolution on YouTube so you get continuous playback in more places as opposed to stops and starts. ABC made the call to restrict cellular usage through its app.

In most other respects the Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi "plus" 3G models look and behave similarly. The 3G machine has a plastic back strip on the top and rear that covers the 3G and GPS antennas.

There's a slot on the side for a micro SIM card. Having GPS means locations through Maps and other apps are more accurate.

I didn't run a scientific test, but based on my usage, expect Apple's claim of some nine hours of battery life to be on the mark, about an hour less than you'll get on the Wi-Fi-only model.

Samsung Introduces Corby -- Touchscreen Mobile Phone for Youth

Samsung Electronics today announced the availability of Samsung Corby (model: S3650), a mobile phone designed to support the digitally connected lifestyles of today’s young mobile users. The Samsung Corby, available across Europe later this month, is a full-touch handset that places users at the center of the social media revolution with a wide range of social networks support, such as Facebook, Twitter and MySpace. The new mobile complements the company’s touch screen strategy, “touch for every lifestyle,” by targeting the youth market.

“We see strong growth opportunities in this sector and will continue to pioneer new markets with innovative technology. The Corby is consistent with Samsung’s legacy of developing new products and technologies designed for specific audiences and bringing new devices quickly to market,” explained JK Shin, Executive Vice President and Head of Samsung Electronics’ Mobile Communications Division.

The device represents a complete makeover for the youth segment, with its eye-catching profile featuring two-tone diagonal contours. The Samsung Corby is notable for both its body design and colors - which mark a significant break from the way full touch phones are usually designed. It is available in bold color options such as Jamaican Yellow, Cupid Pink, Minimal White, and Festival Orange so that users can choose their favorite colors.

“Globally, we are number one for full-screen touch phones and recognize the importance of social networks in the modern mobile industry. Samsung’s target audiences are at the heart of its business strategy and the design and functionality of Samsung Corby meets the needs of a highly digitally connected and style conscious youth audience - as does the affordable price point,” continued JK Shin.

The best social networking services are combined with enhanced multimedia capabilities in a compact form factor. Corby’s 2.8-inch QVGA screen delivers a quality online video experience and its quad band connectivity and support for EDGE networks means that Samsung Corby users can stay in touch regardless of their location.

Samsung Corby will be available in European countries starting from mid September at approximately 150 EUR.

Latest 3D TV Technology Offers Interactive Control

The live 3D TV system consists of (left) an array of 64 cameras that captures multi-view videos of a live scene and (right) an integral photography display with 60 viewing directions that reproduces an autostereoscopic 3D video of the scene.
(PhysOrg.com) -- Three-dimensional TV is now closer than ever to becoming a reality for consumers, and the latest research is investigating the full extent of 3D TV’s possibilities. In a recent study, researchers at the University of Tokyo and Hitachi, Ltd., have presented a 3D TV system that captures a live scene in real time and reproduces it on an autostereoscopic display. The system also offers interactive control, allowing viewers to adjust viewing parameters such as cropping a scene and reproducing an appropriate amount of depth.
“The greatest advantage of our system is to provide interactive control of the viewing parameters,” lead author of the study Yuichi Taguchi, a Ph.D. student at the University of Tokyo, told PhysOrg.com. “The interactive control is essential for reproducing a dynamic 3D scene with desirable conditions, which depend on the contents of the scene, the viewer's preference, and the display  specifications.”

The 3D TV system, called TransCAIP, captures a live scene using an array of 64 video cameras that are all connected via Ethernet cables to one PC, which converts images from all the video cameras into images for the display. Each video camera contains a built-in HTTP server, which sends motion JPEG sequences to the PC.

The PC then converts the 64 input views captured by the cameras to an “integral photography image” made of 60 views, which correspond to the viewing directions of the display. Using an image-based rendering technique, the PC converts the images in real-time, and then arranges the pixels to produce the integral photography image. The entire process, called light field conversion, is implemented on the single PC in real-time, requiring a few hundred milliseconds per frame.

Like all autostereoscopic displays, the new 3D TV system doesn’t require viewers to wear special glasses. Instead, the display reproduces various viewpoint images, allowing viewers to see a different image in each eye or by moving their head (the parallax effect). Although the basic principles of autostereoscopic 3D displays were developed more than a century ago, only with recent technological advances has it been possible to actually build autostereoscopic displays since they require such a large number of light rays (the resolution of a view times the number of viewpoints).

About 3D TV, movies and games now and in the future

Technological development in latest years has made it realistic to have faith in TV in 3D for everyone. The renaissance for 3D movies in the cinemas has created a new hope, that consumers will embrace the new televisions with 3D technology, so that TV shows, movies and computer games can be enjoyed from the couch with an extra dimension.
The big challenge now is that the producers of movies, games and tv sets will have to agree on a standard among the 3D technologies. A standard that will save us from having multiple 3D-glasses, multiple players for movies and games etc. Just like the match between blu-ray and HD-DVD, we may risk that several operators on the market will fight for their own 3D format.
An international movie organisation, is precisely working for a common standard for 3D content in the consumer homes no matter the player or medium. They are cooperating with a number of producers and suppliers of 3D content and 3D equipment, including Philips, to find the optimal solution to the problem of reaching a common standard. A 3D standard that will make us able to sit down in our living rooms in the future without thinking about standards and formats.
